Summer League Match Reports 200716th July South Herts vs Cheshunt 8.30pmOn one of the most pleasant evenings for hockey so far in this summer league South Herts drew with Cheshunt, the final score being 4-4. The first half was dominated by South Herts who were hugging the centre line and heading straight for the circle. An early injury meant they lost the advantage of having a substitute, however this didn’t seem to affect them at all. The first goal came from Sarah Jowett, who was ably assisted by Faye Jowett by crossing it to Sarah in the circle and the shot flew past the keeper. Play continued and both Caroline Stanners and Caroline Partridge were having a great time storming game through the Cheshunt defence, often out-manoeuvring more than one defender. Jo Shadbolt also played well having been moved from her usual position of Right Back to Right Wing. South Herts’ second goal came as a result of two short corners, the first awarded for stick tackles in the circle. During the course of the first short corner the ball hit a defenders foot, and a second short corner ensued. South Herts used the opportunity and Caroline Stanners took the shot and scored. After half-time Cheshunt fought back with a vengeance and scored early with a clear shot at goal. However South Herts did not give up and Sarah Jowett scored for the second time from a short corner moving well on her way towards a hat-trick. Cheshunt retaliated with a goal scored from a short distance while the South Herts keeper, Georgia Peedle, was on the ground after diving to save an earlier shot. After this South Herts dominated play again with Cheshunt only able to get the odd run clear of the defence. A pass into the circle was nicely deflected into the goal by Sarah Jowett who in doing so scored her hat-trick. Following this, Cheshunt played with more force and managed to score a further two goals, making good use of the fact that they had a substitute and South Herts were tiring. Their third goal came from a lot of crowding in front of the goal and the ball managed to slip through. Their fourth goal, and last one of the match, was a lucky cross from the right post to the left and snuck in behind the keeper who was down on the right side after saving the first shot. It was a good game from a strong South Herts side with the help from keeper, Georgia Peedle, who they borrowed from Chicksticks and she did a great job for the team. Scorers; Caroline Stanners (1), Sarah Jowett (3) Team list: Caroline Partridge, Nicola Holland, Sue Richardson, Jo Shadbolt, Lucy Jowett, Faye Jowett, Caroline Stanners, Georgia Peedle, Michelle Lewis, Claire, Jackie, Sarah Withers The next match is Wednesday 25th July at 7.15pm against Hertford Ladies. Written by Sarah Withers 19th June South Herts vs Harlow 7.15pmAs nobody can decide what the final score was on Tuesday evening (was it 4-1 or 3-1) this won’t be a proper match report. I do however promise to be more vigilant at future games and keep track of how many we’re losing by, or maybe if our luck turns how many we’re winning by. Harlow was the one team we haven’t lost to previously during this summer and that gave us hope that perhaps this could be our chance at winning a game... this unfortunately was not meant to be. Both teams were evenly matched in skill and fitness and the game was even in every respect; it was a fast paced match on both sides and no one had a chance to sit on their heels. In the first half South Herts had more possession of the ball and the second half was quite even between both teams. South Herts had an early chance of a goal after a pass to Sarah Withers in the D where she took an amazing air shot that was closer to taking out a defending Harlow player than hitting the ball. Consequently south herts lost possession for a Harlow a hit out. The first goal of the match came from Harlow with an outburst of speed and agility that got straight through the defence. Not too disheartened by this, South Herts carried on to dominate the play and with some great runs and fantastic passing down the field managed to get a short corner. Disappointingly it was a missed opportunity and play returned to Harlow. It was not long before South Herts got their chance. Caroline Stanners took the game into her own capable hands and scored a great goal that dodged the goalies feet and hit the backboard. After this success it was half-time, and time for a downpour of rain it seemed. The game ensued in the second half in much the same fashion; both teams had some great runs up the outside and with some fantastic defending and both Claire Moore and Caroline Stanners managed runs through the middle. There were a number of short corners in this half but none of them led to a goal for either side. Whether it was the rain or just how far on the match was South Herts conceded two more goals in this half but were still fighting strong. Both Moore and Sue Dyer played an excellent game pushing the defence up which allowed the forward and midfield players to push further into the D and add pressure to the Harlow defence. At the centre of the game Faye Jowett held the team together as acting captain, and was unlucky not to score on several occasions. Despite losing the game, it was one of the best so far in this summer league, playing well as a team with some amazing passing skills. If we continue to improve like this we’ll even be in with a chance of winning a few matches. Our next game is Wednesday 11 July against the Chicksticks at the later time-slot of 8.30pm.
