Newmarket 1st XI v South Herts 1st XI

19th October 2008

South Herts Ladies 4 – 1 Newmarket Ladies

South Herts 1st Xl achieved their third win of the season with a convincing victory over Newmarket.

Having dominated the first 20 minutes of the match, Herts fell a goal behind when a Newmarket shot was blocked on the line by Moore’s foot resulting in a penalty flick; which was duly despatched by the Newmarket player.

Herts struggled to get back into their stride but as half time approached, Walker took a quick free hit which was flicked on by Faye Jowett to sister Sarah who tapped the ball between the keeper’s legs for the equaliser.

A stern half time talk roused Herts from their slumber and the team looked far more up for the fight in the second half. Tighter marking saw Spencer and Cullen cutting out any Newmarket attacks whilst Moore and Stanners neatly out-manoeuvred the opposition to storm down the left on a number of occasions.

Herts' second came from a Newmarket mistake with the defender presenting Herts with the ball. Intricate passing from Lucy Edwards and Faye Jowett, set up Sarah Jowett in front of goal and she slotted past the keeper.

A third goal for Herts came from a messy corner with Newmarket blocking a number of Herts shots before Jowett completed her hat-trick with a fortunate mis-hit which dribbled over the line.

Newmarket had few chances all of which were dealt with ably by Gronia Morley deputising in the Herts’ goal. At the other end of the pitch, both Partridge and Walker were unlucky with a number of penalty corners whilst Richardson smashed the ball into the back of the net but the umpire ruled out the goal for an earlier infringement.

Herts’ final goal came from another penalty corner with Partridge smashing the ball goalwards, before Jowett stuck out her stick sending the ball into the roof of the net.

A good win to send the Herts players home happy on their long journey home.
