South Herts 1st XI v Bedford 2nd XI

26 January 2008

A welcome return to winning ways saw South Herts ladies beat Bedford IIs in a closely fought game.

Herts continued to look a little below par in the first half but two fine saves from the returning Mo Gough kept Bedford at bay whilst the defence looked tighter than in recent weeks, helped by Claire Moore escaping from her duties as substitute keeper.

Herts mustered few chances in the half but were unlucky not to score when a glancing shot went narrowly wide minutes before half time.

The second half began more positively for Herts with Caroline Stanners making two fine runs into the area which almost set up goals. Herts scored the opener when the umpire played a good advantage to allow Anna Walker to shoot and Lucy Edwards to score from the rebound after the keeper saved the initial shot.

South Herts now looked far more confident and attacked straight from the restart. Within minutes Edwards had a second after good work on the right saw a resurgent Cate Jackson feed an accurate pass to Edwards who swept the ball in past the keeper’s head.

Herts continued to press forward in search of a third but in doing so allowed Bedford to score with a quick counter attack to leave a nervous last five minutes. Not to be denied the Herts defence stood firm and held out for the victory.

Goals: Lucy Edwards (2)
