Bedford 2nd XI v South Herts 1st XI

27 October 2007

South Herts 1st Xl continued their high scoring start to the season with a 6-1 victory over Bedford 2nds.

Most of the early pressure came from Bedford who attacked with pace but were unable to get past the rigid defence of Ruth Spencer, Vikki Ayres and Claire Moore. On the rare occasions they found a way through, keeper Mo continued her excellent start to the season making a number of saves.

Herts came more into the game as half time approached and took a surprise lead when Lucy Edwards fired a short corner across the circle which bounced off the defender for Sarah Jowett to tee up Caroline Partridge for a shot which blazed past the keeper’s head before she had a chance to move.

Herts moved quickly into a two goal lead in the second half when Anna Walker robbed her opposing number then Moore and Caroline Stanners combined to work their way through the Bedford defence allowing Jowett to slot the goal past the keeper.

The two goal cushion was short lived as Bedford scored a fortuitous goal via the back of their forward’s stick. However, Herts struck back immediately with a somewhat lucky goal of their own as Jowett and the defender both went for a corner from Cate Jackson, the ball ended up in the net and Herts were adjudged to have scored.

Bedford lost their discipline after the third Herts goal and a quick breakaway ended with Partridge bagging her second spectacular shot of the afternoon once again trying to break the back of the net as she fired in from the top of the D.

Herts made the score look a little flattering when first Edwards beat the keeper at her near post after fine work from Sue Richardson and then Jackson and Walker combined well on the right to set up Stanners to score her first goal of the season.

Goals: Caroline Partridge (2), Sarah Jowett (2), Lucy Edwards (1), Caroline Stanners (1)
