South Herts 2nd XI v Broxbourne 4th XI06 October 2007South Herts 2nd XI stormed to their first win in over a year on Saturday, defeating Broxbourne 4’s six-nil. Winning the toss and choosing to take the first pushback gave South Herts the advantage of having possession at the start of the game and from that moment they dominated play for most of the first half. A pass across the front of the goal from Shelley Farmer ensured that Kathryn Garden could not miss the open goal only a few feet in front of her. Soon after this goal, the second arrived courtesy of Chris Field who received a pass from Garden. Broxbourne fought back and took possession for a while, forcing South Herts to move back and play more defensively, until Karen Lawson took a free hit and sent the ball flying to the other end of the pitch. Farmer got her own goal at the end of the first half taking a rebound from the goal-keepers pads and knocking it in to take the score to 3-0. After half-time Broxbourne played hard and made sure the ball stayed in the South Herts end of the pitch, pressuring the defence and having a couple of unlucky misses. Due to Broxbourne’s renewed strength South Herts swapped a couple of their players round, and as a result regained possession. The final three goals came in quick succession. Field took the first, sending the ball into the goal so hard it rebounded off the backboard. Vanessa Porter took the second, with a nifty reverse sweep from the left post. Field took the last goal of the match, securing her first hat-trick of the season after both Clare Pollitt and Farmer got the ball past three Broxbourne defenders to Field, who knocked it to the back of the goal. Overall a good effort from South Herts, who lost their first match of the season against Hertford 3’s. Player of the Match went to Kerry McCann who played excellently in midfield. Goals: Chris Field (3), Kathryn Garden, Shelley Farmer, Vanessa Porter |
