South Herts 1st XI v Haverhill 1st XI

6th November 2008

On Saturday 6th December South Herts made the long trip to Suffolk to play Haverhill.

The day didn’t begin too well with a number of players having trouble finding the pitch and then having to walk through woodland and into a housing estate then finally arriving at the pitch to find a nearer carpark!

The game started slowly with South Herts dominant in attack but not managing to convert the couple of short corners that came their way. Haverhill broke quickly out of defence to their high forwards who managed to cause trouble in South Herts defending circle.

Haverhill’s first goal came from a penalty flick and a second followed quickly from another break from a South Herts attack. Eventually South Herts’ attacks were rewarded with a goal. Jo Spinks caused trouble for Haverhill and worked really hard in the circle for Caroline Stanners to slam the ball into the goal.

As half time approached Haverhill’s short corners were just too effective for South Herts and went down 1-3 at the break. During the half time talk, South Herts knew that they were much better than the current score and started the second half more positively.

A well worked break out of defence involving most players through to Lucy Edwards who chased down a ball that looked like it was going to go out of play created South Herts second goal. Again, Caroline Stanners was there to roof the ball into the back of the net.

Unfortunately the final result finished 2-5 and a very disappointed South Herts left the pitch feeling hard done by but should be pleased with all the hard work that everyone put in. It obviously was not South Herts day but are looking to put behind them last week's game and to focus on climbing back up the table in the New Year.

A big thank you goes to Alan Field for travelling with us to umpire and to Sarah Jowett for playing even though she is injured and has been advised to rest. That’s dedication for you…
