South Herts 1st XI 4 – 2 Wapping 2nd XI

After a long wait, South Herts got their fourth win of the season against a strong Wapping team on Saturday afternoon.

Herts started well and had much of the early possession but midway through the first half they let in two quick goals against their pacey opposition and looked to be heading for another defeat.

Herts kept their heads up and were rewarded when Vanessa Porter crossed from the right for Sarah Jowett to score with a shot form behind her back. Lucy Edwards then went close to equalising only to see her shot rebound back off the post.

The Herts players continued to press forward at the start of the second half and when they earned a penalty corner Anna Walker blasted the ball past the keeper and defender to equalise for Herts.

The Wapping players appeared flustered by the Herts comeback and with man of the match Faye Jowett blocking off their attacks, Herts were able to build pressure on their opposition. The breakthrough came when a shot by Porter was pushed out by the keeper into the path of Jo Spinks who knocked the ball towards goal for Jowett to slide in for her second.

Herts continued to look for goals and scored a fourth through Porter when she fired in at the back post after good interplay between Sue Richardson and Caroline Stanners.

Herts thought they’d scored a fifth when Edwards lifted the ball over the keeper but the goal was ruled out for an earlier foul.
