Cambridge Nomads 1st XI v South Herts 1st XI

21st February 2009

South Herts 1 – 0 Cambridge Nomands

A superb performance from stand in keeper Jo Spinks saw South Herts extend their winning run to four games on Saturday afternoon.

South Herts made a strong start to the game and were rewarded with a goal midway through the first half. From a free hit, Sue Richardson played an excellent ball through to Sarah Jowett who ran in unchallenged to deflect the ball past the keeper.

Cambridge then raised their game and it was only through the agility and reflexes of Spinks in the Herts goal that their lead remained intact as she pulled off a string of saves including a point blank save with her hand.

The second half was an uncharacteristically aggressive affair for South Herts as their players became riled by a number of niggly challenges. Both teams had chances to score but Laura Cullen made a last ditch tackle to block one Cambridge attack whilst Claire Moore, Ruth Spencer and Caroline Partridge combined to keep the dangerous Cambridge centre forward at bay.

At the other end, Caroline Stanners was unfortunate not to score having been set up from a well worked penalty corner by Anna Walker. Faye Jowett and Lucy Edwards were both thwarted when through on goal, Edwards by a somewhat dubious foul given against her and Jowett running out of steam to get away from the defender.

At the final whilst, Herts' long journey was rewarded with another win and they now look forward to a series of home games.
