South Herts 1st XI v WGC 1st XI7th March 2009South Herts played their local rivals, Welwyn Garden City, on Saturday on home turf at Dame Alice Owens School in Potters Bar. The game started equally with both teams having attacking opportunities and Herts were grateful to new goalkeeper Emma Wanostrocht for making some early saves. Herts found the back of the net first, resulting from a free hit taken by Sue Richardson on the right wing which found Caroline Partridge in the circle who fired home to put them 1-0 ahead. Shortly after, Herts were fortunate to score their second thanks to Vanessa Porter who beat her defenders in the circle to push the ball over the line and into the back of the goal. Herts were 2-0 up at half time and knew they needed to keep working hard to maintain their lead. The second half began with Welwyn Garden City dominating possession and challenging Herts’ defence. However, some excellent clearances out of defence allowed Herts to attack again. Excellent performances by, Man of the Match, Lucy Edwards and Faye Jowett created chances in attack that were saved by the Welwyn keeper. The 3rd goal came from a cross into the circle by Anna Walker which found Porter who took a first time shot on goal, which came off the defenders foot and lobbed the keeper into the back of the goal. Herts played great team hockey throughout and another well worked break out of defence and some excellent passes between Walker, Partridge and Caroline Stanners through midfield produced another goal, this time finished by Stanners. South Herts are at home again next Saturday at 12pm against Bishops Stortford. Goalscorers: Caroline Partridge, Vanessa Porter x 2, Caroline Stanners
