South Herts 1s v Bishops Stortford 1s

14th March 2009

South Herts played on their home ground again this weekend, at Dame Alice Owens School against Bishops Stortford 1s, who are currently 2nd in the league table.

South Herts were looking forward to playing a friendlier game of hockey after last week’s game.

Herts began the game dominating possession and gained an early short corner through some great moves by forwards Faye Jowett, Lucy Edwards and Jo Spinks. Anna Walker received the injected ball at the top of the circle and fired home a great shot giving Herts an early lead.

Bishops Stortford reacted well and came back at Herts winning a number of short corners that Herts were luckily able to defend successfully despite their quick injections, and some excellent keeping by Mo Gough kept the scoreline at 1-0 into half time. Herts were grateful to have Carrie Waller back in the side after a couple of years away from the club and her strong defending kept the quick Bishop Stortford’s attackers at bay.

Herts knew they had to work hard and keep focused during the second half to keep their 1-0 lead. Another break out of defence created Herts’ second goal which was injected into the circle from the right wing which found Edwards at the top of the circle with a first time strike that found the top left hand corner of the goal to double their lead.

Bishops Stortford came back stronger and won numerous short corners towards the end of the game. With about 5 minutes to go until the final whistle, Stortford deservingly scored with a great strike from the top of the circle. Herts managed to hold out and came out 2-1 winners.

This victory now sees South Herts in 4th position in the league which is a great achievement seeing as they were newly promoted into this league at the beginning of the season.

Goalscorers: Anna Walker and Lucy Edwards.
