South Herts 1s v Haverhill 1s

28th March 2009

South Herts were back on home turf this Saturday with their penultimate league game against Haverhill 1s.

South Herts started lively and dominated early possession demonstrating excellent build up play out of defence into attack, however the strong Haverhill defence kept Herts from converting their chances.

Haverhill were effective in attack and won a short corner mid way into the first half. Herts were caught at the near post and Haverhill smashed the ball home to lead 1-0. Herts knew they needed to step up their game and some good balls from midfield up to Sarah Jowett, Vanessa Porter and Lucy Edwards in attack, provided some more positive chances.

Herts won a couple of short corners towards the end of the first half that were well defended resulting in more frustration for Herts. However a long corner injected from the right wing by Sue Richardson found Porter in the circle who flicked the ball goal bound. The Haverhill keeper superbly saved the shot but it deflected out to Jowett, who, with back to goal, pounced on the chance and flicked the ball over the line to bring the score level going into half time at 1-1.

Herts were determined to make the game theirs and started the second half with lots of energy and plentiful attacking opportunities. They had many short corners which they were just unable to convert due to the excellent Haverhill defence.

Eventually, Herts scored with a strike from the top of the circle by Caroline Partridge who was relieved to finally convert one of many short corner opportunities.

With about 5 minutes left to play, the game was stopped after one of the Haverhill players was injured.

South Herts play their final game of the season at Dame Alice Owens School on Saturday 4th April against Newmarket.
