Potters Bar 1 v Phoenix 119th September 2009Saturday saw Potters Bar Ladies 1st team (formally South Herts) begin their new league campaign on home turf against Phoenix Ladies 1s. Potters Bar were forced into defence early on and had to prevent Phoenix from dominating and excellent work by Karen Lawson in defence and Mo Gough in goal prevented any goal scoring opportunities. Anna Walker and Jo Spinks worked very hard in central midfield to create counter attacks out of defence and provide excellent balls through into Sarah Jowett who was unfortunate not to convert due to the excellent goal keeping by Phoenix. It was the visitors that scored first from a penalty corner half way through the first half. Potters Bar knew they were capable of bring the game back and a run through midfield by captain, Caroline Partridge, brought the equaliser with a strike from the top of the D. The second half saw Potters Bar have more possession and produce more scoring opportunites, Jowett’s determination paid off and eventually beat the Phoenix keeper to put Bar ahead. Caroline Stanners was unlucky not to score moments later when her shot hit the post after some great work from the left wing. Potters Bar were now fired up and kept up their hard work in defence and midfield to prevent Phoenix from drawing another goal back. A quick ball out of defence found Vanessa Porter on the right wing, who ran the length of the pitch and found herself one on one with the keeper and calmly pushed the ball through the keepers legs to produce Bar’s 3rd goal. Another attacking move from the left wing by Stanners, found Partridge who attacked into the circle and crossed into Porter whos shot was blocked off the line by a defender and Bar were awarded a penalty flick, Claire Moore who had a solid game in defence was unfortunate not to convert as the excellent Phoenix keeper dived the right way and saved the shot. The game finished 3-1 to Potters Bar with some excellent team work and goal scoring opportunities demonstrated which Bar will endeavour to repeat next weekend when they host Harpenden at home. Team: Mo Gough, Claire Moore, Karen Lawson, Faye Jowett, Viki Ayres, Caroline Stanners, Anna Walker, Jo Spinks, Caroline Partridge, Vanessa Porter, Sarah Jowett, Shelley Farmer.
