Potters Bar 1 v Harpenden 126th September 2009Potters Bar Ladies 1s hosted Harpenden at home on Saturday in their 2nd league game of the season. Potters Bar knew they were in for a tough game as Harpenden had come down from the higher league. Harpenden started the game very strongly and kept Potters Bar in their defending half and having to work hard to prevent their numerous attacks on goal. Their constant pressure on Bar’s defence paid off and Harpenden took advantage of a moment of weakness and took an early lead. An unstable Bar defence was put under pressure again almost straight after the restart and despite some great keeping from Mo Gough, Harpenden once again found the back of the net and doubled their lead. Potters Bar had to up their game and a slight change of team formation saw them fill their midfield and leave Sarah Jowett and Lucy Edwards as attackers. Bar were able to push forward and form their own attacks on the Harpenden defence resulting in a number of shots on target saved by their keeper. A break out of defence by Harpenden caught Bar off guard and their well worked moves through midfield resulted in another goal leaving Bar 0-3 down. Bar knew they were better than this and showed composure in midfield to put more pressure on Harpenden. Stanners worked her way up the left wing beating a number of defenders and with support from Jowett in the circle pushed the ball under the diving keeper to bring a goal back. The second half saw Potters Bar having more possession of the ball and demonstrated some good teamwork. They won a number of short corners and were unlucky not to convert. There were no further goals in the 2nd half by either side and the game finished 1-3 to a deserving Harpenden team. Next Saturday, Potters Bar play their first away game of the season against Blueharts.
