Potters Bar 1st XI v Old de Ferrians 1st XI24th October 2009On Saturday Potters Bar Ladies 1s were back at their home ground against Old de Ferrians. Potters Bar were determined to get back on winning form and knew that today was a must win game for them to improve their league position. Bar dominated early possession and worked hard through midfield via Sue Richardson, Anna Walker and Caroline Stanners to create attacking chances. Some excellent work by Vanessa Porter on the right wing brought Bar’s first goal. Walker found Porter on the right wing and beating her defender, Porter crossed into the circle and Sarah Jowett smashed the ball past the Old de Ferrian’s keeper to give Bar a relatively early lead. Bar allowed the opposition to come back and found themselves tight in defence after taking the lead. Old de Ferrians kept a player high in attack who troubled Bar’s defence and won a number of corners for the opposition. Before the game Bar had practised their defending and attacking penalty corner routines, which paid off as Stanners and Richardson pounced on the Old de Ferrians striker and prevented any shot on goal. At half time Bar had kept their lead of 1-0 however, they needed to keep working hard to ensure Old de Ferrians did not draw one back. The game was still very open. Great teamwork by Bar in the second half brought their second goal. Bar won a short corner and their trusted rehearsed routine before the game allowed Walker to find Stanners who slammed the ball over the line to double their lead. Shortly after, Bar were back in attack. They began to look more comfortable on the ball than previous weeks and some determined work by Porter found herself with the ball in the circle and pushed the ball between the keeper’s legs to score Bar’s third goal of the afternoon. Towards the end of the game, Bar were forced into defence and Old de Ferrians brought a goal back via their very skilful centre forward who managed to out-do Bar’s defence and put her shot past Bar’s hardworking keeper, Mo Gough. Next Saturday, Potters Bar make the trip to Braintree to play Phoenix Ladies 1s to hopefully continue their winning streak. Goalscorers: Sarah Jowett, Vanessa Porter, Caroline Stanners.
